Across the Kansas City region, fall brings orchard outings, hayrides and family Halloween celebrations alongside haunted attractions, ghost stories and traditions with a little more fright. However you like to celebrate the season, these harvests and haunts belong on your October calendar.

Kansas City, Kansas

Nothing says fall in Kansas City, Kansas, like a trip to Cider Hill Family Orchard! Grab your family for a day of apple picking, pumpkin hunting, cider donut eating, a hayride and time spent in the crisp autumn air. Kansas City, Missouri

For those who prefer their October outings on the scarier side, Worlds of Fun becomes “Worlds of Fright” with its annual Halloween Haunt, the Midwest’s largest Halloween event and one of KC’s most fearful fall traditions. On select nights, the family-friendly park transforms into one of the scariest destinations in town with 400-plus monsters, spooky shows and chilling thrill rides.

Leavenworth, Kansas

Leavenworth is a spirited city, and it owes a lot of its spooky history to its 200-year-old neighbor, Fort Leavenworth. Stories of ghostly activity include apparitions of lost soldiers wandering the grounds of Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the phantom sound of hoofbeats as a spectral cavalry rides the West Parade.

You can go on your own paranormal investigation on Oct. 24 with the fort’s annual Haunted Walking Tour, with costumed re-enactors leading you on a journey through frontier history.

Lenexa, Kansas

For one magical night a year, Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park is transformed into the Enchanted Forest, where there is something to delight even the smallest Halloween revelers.

Hop on a hayride, decorate a pumpkin and stroll around Rose’s Pond for activities including a puppet show, music, a fire show and more. It’s a festive way for families with younger children to get into the Halloween spirit without too many scares.Learn More: https://www.lenexa.com/City-Calendar/Annual-Events/Enchanted-Forest

Merriam, Kansas

Get into the spooky spirit at Halloween Happenings in Merriam! Dress the kids in their Halloween costumes for a fun test run and enjoy an afternoon of games, activities, CANDY, and a trunk-or-treat featuring Merriam businesses.

Join the fun Saturday, October 17, from 2–3:30 p.m. at Merriam Marketplace for an easy, family-friendly way to kick off Halloween with plenty of treats and a little spooky fun!

Overland Park, Kansas

Bring the whole family to Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead for Night of the Living Farm on October 16, 17, 23 and 24 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Offering a mix of spooky and not-so-spooky fun for all ages, the event gives kids the opportunity to watch mad scientist experiments, roast marshmallows, get their fortune read and experience scary and fright-free hayrides. They can also compete in obstacle courses, pirate ship races and a flashlight scavenger hunt.

Make the Most of October in KC

October doesn’t last long, so fill it with the things you’ll miss when the season is over: cider donuts, pumpkin-filled afternoons, costumes, hayrides, and maybe a ghost story or two!
